Mucormycosis is an uncommon fungal infection that can involve the nose, sinuses and nearby structures. It is seen more often in people with poorly controlled diabetes or weakened immunity.
Early warning signs
One-sided facial pain or swelling, nasal blockage with dark or bloody discharge, black crusting inside the nose, numbness of the face, or changes in vision should prompt an urgent ENT review.
Why early care matters
The infection can spread quickly. Early diagnosis with nasal endoscopy and imaging, control of blood sugar, antifungal medication and timely surgery to remove affected tissue offer the best chance of a good outcome.
Prevention
Keep blood sugar under control, take steroids only as prescribed, and do not ignore persistent nasal or facial symptoms, especially if you have diabetes.
